"Shall I compare thee to a summer’s day was commissioned by Somerset Chamber Choir to celebrate the life of Rosemary Semple and is a setting of the much loved Shakespeare Sonnet 18. The sentiment of the poem and the season and occasion suggested a direct and, I hope, emotionally appealing setting, with the timeless text always to the fore. Various choral textures are explored, from the imitative lines of ‘Sometime too hot’, to the warm richness of the closing pages where the choir divides into eight parts. Throughout there is opportunity for word-painting, yet the essential positive nature of the poem is never obscured."
